February 2006 What is Counter-aperture? In recent years the adherents of the counter-aperture have declared a number of benefits in favour of this principle of loudspeaker construction. Unlike the traditional way of sound reproduction where a driver membrane moves forward and backward, thus first compacting then rarefying the air (these fluctuations reaching us as sound), two identical drivers are positioned vertically and opposite each other instead. They work in unison without any delays, phase or frequency discrepancies. The pulsation of the air column turns into a single ideal radiator. Thus the so-called monopoly of pressure is created. The important thing here is that the pressure is not observed throughout the distance between the drivers, but is totally concentrated between the drivers to form well-balanced distribution of sound in all directions... |
